Boost Your Charoset with Turmeric and Ginger, Two Anti-Inflammatory Superstars

Happy Passover, everyone!! Growing up, Passover was my favorite Jewish holiday. I always loved that it told the story of the Jew’s freedom from Egypt through food and prayer. As a very imaginative child, reciting the 10 plagues that God imposed on the Egyptians (like turning water into blood, hail storms, locusts, darkness, and many more frightful things) while spilling wine or grape juice was irresistibly fun! I mean, seriously, what kid — or adult — doesn’t enjoy ritualistically playing with their food and drinks?

Charoset, which symbolizes the mortar the Jews used to make bricks while they were slaves in Egypt, is my most beloved Passover treat. Traditionally made from apples, honey, cinnamon, walnuts, and kosher wine, it’s a healthy and delicious side dish.  For my version, I decided to add fresh grated ginger, a dash of ground turmeric, and lemon juice to boost the nutrient and flavor profile. Eat my Spiced Charoset as a side dish, snack, or dessert!

Ingredients

  • 6 apples, chopped
  • 1 cup walnuts, chopped
  • Juice from 1 lemon
  • 1/4 cup red wine (try to find one on the sweeter side. I used Tarantas Tempranillo)
  • 2 TBS raw honey
  • 1-inch slice of fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 TSP cinnamon
  • 1/8 TSP turmeric

Directions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Toss until the apples are completed coated.
  2. Serve immediately for a milder flavor or chill in the fridge for 24 hours to let everything marinate.
